The research is focused on posterior capsular opacification, intraocular lens design and biocompatibility. He has published over 130 papers in academic journals, and his book, An Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology, won the prize for the best medical textbook of the year when it was published in 1985. It is now in its third edition and is published in seven languages, being one of the five most widely read ophthalmic textbooks worldwide.

He is a member of the board, and President Elect, of the United Kingdom Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society, and a member of the Program & Scientific Research Committees for the European Cataract and Refractive Surgery Society, and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He lectures widely around the world. In the recent past, this has included invitations to speak in Saudi Arabia, the USA, Australia and Germany, and he was one of eight eye surgeons worldwide (the only one from the UK) to receive an 'Innovation Award' from Alcon Laboratories in the USA for his research on intraocular lens design. Recently, he has been a guest lecturer at the DGII in Germany, the Pakistan Ophthalmological Society and the Swedish Ophthalmic Society, the Japanese Cataract Society, and the South African Ophthalmological Society.
